Future direction outlined at AACB Annual General Meeting

The Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) recently held its Annual General Meeting where future actions were highlighted and office holders were elected.

Stuart Nettlefold, CEO of Business Events Tasmania was re-elected as Vice President and Simon Ambrose, CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd was newly elected as Treasurer.

Lyn Lewis-Smith, CEO of Business Events Sydney, will continue as President. Lyn thanked the AACB board and management for their efforts and ongoing commitment to the business events sector over the past twelve months, acknowledging key initiatives delivered in 2013/14:

· Partnership with Deloitte Access Economics to validate the economic and strategic value proposition of international business events.
· Fostering strong connections with Federal Government in relation to trade and investment.
· Implementation of a market intelligence project using advanced systems and processes to enable reporting of Australia’s bidding activity through convention bureaux.
· Expanding the AACB team to include a Strategic Communications Manager.
· Establishment of a Governance, Risk & Audit Committee.

The next 12 months will focus on raising the profile of the business events industry and furthering the work of AACB and its members to help drive the visitor economy through high yield international delegates, including:

· Delivery of Deloitte Access Economics report prioritising the value of Australia’s international business events sector.
· Positioning the international business events sector as a key economic action strategy for the Federal Government by aligning bidding strategies with Australia’s trade and investment priority areas and promoting our comparative advantage.
· Partnering with Austrade to establish support mechanisms throughout the bid process for key international business events.
· Realise the strategic significance of Australia’s convention bureaux by maximising opportunities through AACB’s forward calendar of bid wins.
