Can Tho promotes new air routes

CAN THO The city’s Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Centre will campaign to get airlines to fly to Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa provinces next year to broaden tourism links.

The local media reported that the city is confident that the new routes will be established next year and bring in more foreign and domestic visitors.

There are also plans to develop tourism services and products and organise events to attract foreign tourists next year.

This year the city hopes to welcome 1.3 million visitors, an increase of 4% over last year.

Can Tho International Airport is located in Can Tho in the Mekong Delta region. The airport was opened 1 January 2011 at a cost of USD150 million and can handle up to 5 million passengers a year.

Last year, the airport received 238,000 passengers, much lower than the planned 3 million annually.

Currently, the airport has flights from Hanoi, Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Danang and Taipei.

Can Tho is the fourth largest city in Vietnam, and the largest city in the Mekong Delta. Last year, the region attracted nearly 24 million tourist arrivals of which 2 million were foreigner. Tourism generated over USD220 million in revenue in 2013 up 11% from 2012.
