Delta expands passenger options with new cabin classes

Delta Air Lines is realigning its cabin classes with a new selection of five products.

From 1 March 2015, Delta passengers will be able to book two types of economy classes, ‘Basic Economy’ and ‘Main Cabin’, along with an upgraded ‘Delta Comfort+’ option, a new business class product called ‘Delta One’, and the premium ‘First Class’. Different Delta flights will feature a selection of these products, depending on the aircraft and route.

“We’re providing Delta customers with a thoughtful, well-defined spectrum of options as they make decisions about travel,” explained Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s executive vice president & chief revenue officer. “Whether a customer prioritises the perks of Delta One or the value of Basic Economy, every seat comes with impeccable service and unmatched reliability.”

According to the airline, Basic Economy offers the usual economy class service with “fewer flexibility options”. This option will only be available in select markets. Main Cabin will continue to operate as Delta’s standard economy class product, while Delta Comfort+ will offer “an upgraded experience” on all of Delta’s two-cabin aircraft around the world.

Previously called BusinessElite, Delta One is the airline’s new business class option on long-haul international routes, as well as trans-continental services between New York JFK and Los Angeles or San Francisco. And finally First Class will be offered on short-haul international and domestic routes.

Newly designed Delta One, First Class and Delta Comfort+ seat covers will be installed on aircraft through next year.

This cabin revamp marks the continuation of Delta’s in-flight overhaul. The US carrier has invested billions of dollars updating its aircraft interiors and products, including the roll-out of in-seat power outlets on 225 domestic aircraft, adding more in-flight entertainment options, and equipping its domestic and international jets with in-flight Wi-Fi.
