Colourful Microcar parade marks His Majesty King's 87th Birthday anniversary

BANGKOK – The Royal Thai Army and Jessada Technik Museum, with the support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), jointly organised a colourful procession of more than 150 vintage and micro cars in Bangkok’s historic quarter to celebrate His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 87th birthday anniversary (on 5 December).

The colourful and joyous microcar parade took place on 4 December, 2014, with religious functions to wish the King a healthy and long life. The procession then followed, starting from the Royal Plaza (at the King Rama V Equestrian Monument) along Ratchadamnoen Avenue to Sanam Luang, Pom Mahakan Fort, Maha Chai, Bamrung Muang, Krung Kasem, Yaowaraj and Odeon Square.

The parade was initiated by Jessada Technik Museum, a non-profit educational and recreational museum, dedicated to preserving history and heritage of world-wide vehicles and machines. Its collection consists of old collectible antique cars, motorbikes, boats and helicopters.

 

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “We are very pleased to be part of this special event to show our respect and loyalty and to be grateful to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej during this auspicious occasion. The event is a testament to the loyalty and gratitude that all Thais feel for the King. It also showcases Bangkok as a city of wondrous treasures as the parade passed through many historic landmarks and places of history significance.”

The microcar parade provided a glimpse of the historic landmarks of Bangkok, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace, and beautiful landscape along Ratchadamnoen Avenue or the Royal Avenue, on which the Democracy Monument is located. In addition, there many other special features in the area including an old fort dating back to the late 18th century, memorials, a royal museum and a royal art gallery.

Mr. Thawatchai said, “To celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday, the entire stretch of Ratchadamnoen Avenue is now spectacularly decorated and lit with colourful and beautiful electric firelights, numerous facades and arches, and beautiful flowers and plants, as part of the nationwide celebrations. TAT would like to invite tourists and visitors to take this opportunity to marvel at Bangkok’s historic landmarks while enjoying the joyous ambiance during this the auspicious occasion.”
