Unique venues of Seoul give event planners more to choose from

Korea’s capital offers a wide range of unique venues throughout the city, from traditional and modern to land- and water-based among others, making possible all manner of functions for various sizes of visitors. The growing variety of facility types brings fresh new options and creative flexibility for event planners. To boost the international profile and competitiveness of these unique venues, Seoul has begun providing new support packages and developing a variety of promotional materials regarding these venues.

One of the key roles for unique venues is to serve as an off-site function space for events mostly based in a hotel or convention center, and luckily many of these venues are located a short distance away from the city’s major five star hotels and convention centers. Seoul’s waterfront venues offer stunning views of the river, while venues nestled in the mountains such as Samcheonggak and the Korean Furniture Museum offer both natural scenery and stunning traditional Korean architecture.

Many top city attractions have also been repurposed for the meetings industry, and several have been used for high-profile events. In 2010, the National Museum of Korea hosted the reception and working dinner for global leaders attending the Seoul G20 Summit, as well as the dinner for world leaders during the 2012 National Security Summit. More recently, amusement park Lotte World formed the backdrop for May’s Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific/World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition, where the 2013 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards ceremony was held at Lotte World Ice Rink.

To further boost interest among international event planners in the venues, Seoul City chose 21 unique venues in November for special promotion, and increased it to 39 by the end of the year. The city also provided financial support for several already-popular sites across the capital, in order to highlight their hosting potential. These included waterfront venue Some Sevit (previously known as Floating Island), fine-dining locations Luka511 and The Raum, and traditional Korean experience venues Korea House and Samcheonggak.

Also, a new, searchable website on Seoul’s unique venues is now available on www.miceseoul.com, and highlights the city’s diversity in venues. Arranged into six categories, sections for both include Riverside (and Venues with Views), Traditional, Modern, Performance Halls, Experience Zones, and Museums & Art Centers.
