Filming Thailand brings in cash

BANGKOK  Thailand earned a record THB1,934.82 million from on-location film shoots, January to December 2014, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ Thailand Film Office Department update released Wednesday.
For the entire year, 631 documentaries, advertising slots, TV series, and music videos were filmed on location generating THB1,934.82 million in tourism related revenue compared to 717 productions and THB2,173.35 million in 2013.
The 631 productions were categorised as 159 documentaries, 294 advertising spots, 86 television programmes, 44 music videos and 48 films.
Japanese filmmakers topped the list of 2014 year with 133 productions followed by 122 from Europe, 107 from India, 37 from China, 28 from Hong Kong, 26 from the United States, 22 from South Korea, 18 from Australia, two from Taiwan, and 136 from others.
inside no 2In December alone, there were 57 productions that generated THB179.92 million compared to 35 that circulated THB82.10 million during the same month in 2013.
Japan also led the field in December with 14 productions following by nine from Europe, eight from India, five from Hong Kong, three each from China, US and Australia, two from South Korea, one from Taiwan, and nine from others.
Promoting film shoots comes under a department that is part of Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Films provide positive tourism awareness that encourages travel without a major investment in media or advertising.
While revenue earned from film crews is substantial as stated in the ministry’s data, the bigger picture is the positive awareness of Thailand once the films are circulated.
