YANGON  Ministry of Hotels and Tourism says the country’s tourism industry created 50,000 new jobs last year.
Local media quoted ministry data that suggested the travel industry employed 870,000 people in 2014 compared to 820,000 in 2013.
An expansion in tourism has created jobs for local people mainly in tour companies, hotels and restaurants the report said.
Inside no.4Tourism Minister, U Htay Aung, said that 3 million tourists visited Myanmar last year circulating USD1.135 billion in earnings, compared to 2.04 million visits and USD926 million in 2013.
Since the government recognised tourism as a priority to prop up an ailing economy three years ago, Myanmar’s tourism has taken off.
The dramatic improvement was attributed to pent-up demand from travellers who had previously boycotted the country during decades of military rule and the suppression of basic freedoms.
The lifting of international sanctions also encouraged people to travel and create jobs for local.
This year, tourism should grow to around 4 or 5 million trips and 7.5 million by 2020.
