IHG to debut Chinese brand

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled its first two Hualuxe Hotels, which are designed especially for the Chinese market.

The new brand will make its debut in this first quarter of 2015 in Yangjiang, a coastal city in southern China’s Guangdong province. Then in Q2, the company will add a second Hualuxe hotel in Nanchang, the capital of southeast China’s Jiangxi province.

Richard Solomons, IHG’s CEO, said these hotels would mark the start of a major expansion of the luxury brand in China.

“This is a very important milestone for IHG as we announce the locations of the first two Hualuxe Hotels & Resorts properties in China,” Solomons said. “The brand has been well-received in the market since its launch in 2012 and we are on track with our vision of taking it to 100 cities in Greater China over the next 15 to 20 years.

“The first two hotels, in Nanchang and Yangjiang, are located in China’s heartland and… we are confident they will be welcomed by both Chinese and international consumers.”

Hualuxe Yangjiang City Centre will feature 282 rooms, several F&B outlets and the largest pillar-free ballroom in the city. Overlooking Yuanyang Lake, it will become the first internationally-branded hotel in Yangjiang.

Hualuxe Nanchang High Tech Zone meanwhile, will be situated on floors 39-56 of one of the city’s tallest buildings. It will offer 281 rooms, three restaurants and an 800m² ballroom.

Having first announced the Hualuxe brand in 2012, IHG has since signed 24 hotels in 20 cities across China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu. All of these properties are due to open over the next three to five years. And the company also plans to introduce the Hualuxue concept to major international destinations, such as London and New York, in an effort to target the huge outbound Chinese tourism market.

The name Hualuxe is a combination of the Chinese words for “majestic China” and “luxury”.
