BANGKOK  The Thai Cabinet approved, last week, a proposal submitted by Ministry of Tourism and Sports for Thailand to host World Tourism Day 2016.
The ministry believes the project will demonstrate the kingdom’s potential in terms of tourism service quality and travel safety.
According to the Royal Thai Government website, hosting the World Tourism Day would be an opportunity to raise Thailand’s image and showcase its skills at hosting a world-class event.
Thailand could also promote cultural tourism as part of the theme for the special day.
inside no 1Government spokesman, Dr Yongyuth Mayalarp, said the Cabinet believes the event will help to improve Thailand’s image.
“Whether or not Thailand will host World Tourism Day 2016 depends on the decision of the UN World Tourism Organisation Regional Committee for East Asia and the Pacific due to convene in June.”
Thailand had been a member of the United Nation World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) since 1975 and plays an active role on UNWTO’s committees.
Thailand, through Ministry of Tourism and Sports, was selected chairman of the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific from 2007 to 2009, and was appointed for one more term 2010 to 2011.
The country also hosted the 24th Joint Meeting UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia in Chiang Mai Province.
World Tourism Day is held annually on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of tourism’s importance and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, will host World Tourism Day 2015 on 27 September.
