MAAMIGILI, MALDIVES  Veteran hotelier, Andres Rubio, has returned to this Indian Ocean island nation as general manager of the Loama Resort Maldives at Maamigili.
The recently opened property is positioning itself as an art and cultural heritage resort.
Rubio is back in the Maldives for the third time after completing stints running other five-star resorts in Asia.
He is now managing what the resort’s promoters call an “undiscovered paradise at the archipelago’s ‘final frontier’, Maamigili”. It takes a 45-minute seaplane flight to reach the island after flying to Male the capital.
A Colombian national, Rubio says Loama Resort provides guests with a more layered experience, serving them the traditional Maldives blend of indulgence and sun worship with a smattering of cultural and heritage.

The art and heritage angle is derived by the Loama Art Gallery, the country’s first gallery of contemporary Maldivian art that has the blessing of the National Art Gallery of Maldives.
Loama Museum offers heritage where guests can view an important collection of artefacts from key periods of Maldivian history, ranging from a 15th century Chinese porcelain to the discovery of a pair of 11th Century sunken baths on the island. These objects are part of an ongoing excavation that has unearthed other ancient artefacts now on display at the museum.
Rubio’s hotel career has taken him to Europe and Asia where he has worked for various city and beach properties, including now three assignments in the Maldives.
