Bid to improve overland trips

KHAMMOUANE  Khammouane province will exploit its location on key routes linking Thailand and Vietnam to build tourism.
Lao News Agency quoted Information, Culture and Tourism Department director, Sengthong Phakhounthong, as saying a tourist management network has been established with funding from the Asian Development Bank to develop tourism infrastructure and create jobs from tourism.
The province has identified 198 tourist attractions and some of them are already attracting visitors.
Khammouane province has the potential to become an important travel stop on overland tours from Laos to Vietnam, it said.
inside no 3The province locates in the centre of the country bordered by Bolikhamsai province to the north and northwest, Vietnam to the east, Savannakhet province to the south, and Thailand to the west, makes it a vital tourist route linking Thailand, Vietnam through Laos.
Thakhek, the provincial capital, is situated along the banks of the Mekong River. It borders Thailand, at Nakhon Phanom in Thailand and is the nearest town to the third Friendship Bridge.
The bridge, that spans the Mekong River, opened to traffic 11 November 2011.
