New airport planned near Halong Bay

PHNOM PENH  Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 4.2% in January, this year, according to the country’s statistics and tourist Information Department.
The country attracted 460,577 visits compared to 442,045 during the same month last year.
Released officially by the Ministry of Tourism, Monday, data showed Vietnam led with 76,707 visits increasing 50.4% from 51,013 during the same month in 2014.
The top five supply markets were: South Korea (73,059; -5.3%); China (53,165; +3.8%); Laos (34,458; +1.8%); and the United States (24,465; +8.5%).
inside no 1Thailand ranked in sixth place with 22,250 visits increasing 39.6% from 15,936 visits during the same month last year.
In January, 57.0% (262,356) of all international visitors arrived by air. Siem Reap Airport received the major share, 36.6% (168,539). Phnom Penh Airport received a market share of 20.4% (93,817).
Overland travel accounts for 40.3% (185,550) trips through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while sea travel is a small at 2.8% (12,671).
In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, posted a share of 49.6% attracting 267,015 visits, while Phnom Penh and other destinations accounted for 36.0%, welcoming 193,562 visits. Coastal areas also shared 13.2% with 71,072 visits, while ecotourism areas accounted for 1.2% or 6,483 visits.
By region, Asia Pacific accounted for 72.9% market share and posted an increase of 9.0% supplying 335,849 visits.
Africa recorded an increase of 23.6% with 780 visits following by Americas (+8.6%; 36,706), Middle East (+1.9%; 1,776), Oceania (-4.3%; 18,524), and Europe (-12.5%; 85,466).
Outbound trips by Cambodians, in January, reached 82,107 up 19.7% from 68,618 during the same month last year.
Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, said tourism has contributed to sustaining economic growth, creating jobs and reducing poverty.
This year, the country targets 5 million international visitors, a rise of 11% from 4.5 million last year.QUANG NINH, 19 March 2015: Quang Ninh provincial administration has approved a plan to build an airport to support tourism development in Halong Bay.
Local media reported the airport project is just one of a number of mega investment projects under consideration.
The feasibility study on a Quang Ninh airport, a USD349.52 million terminal to be built close to the Van Don Economic Zone, has been approved by the provincial administration, the report said.
The 288.38-hectare airport will be able to serve 2 million passengers a year, with a runway capable of handling aircraft up to the size of a Boeing B777.
inside no 2The terminal will have two parking areas for the smaller Airbus A321 and two for Boeing B777 aircraft. It will be built under BOT (build-operate-transfer) rules.
Construction would take two years and it is estimated it would take about 45 years for the developer to recoup their investment.
The Quang Ninh airport project received the go-ahead from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung July 2014.
A group of investors, including Joinus Vietnam Co, Posco E&C and Korea Airports Corporations has shown interest in the project.
Quang Ninh province will cover part of the USD34.02 million cost for site clearance.
Once completed, the airport will help to channel more tourists to Halong Bay and Van Don Island. Quang Ninh is 182 km east of Hanoi.
