Car free days in Vientiane

VIENTIANE  Vientiane city authorities want to introduce walking streets to promote tourism following successful trials earlier this year.
The car-free street trial occurred twice in along the road skirting the Mekong River, 31 January to 1 February 1 and 7 to 8 February from 1700 to 2130.
Chao Anou and Francois Ngin streets nearby the Ong Teu, Chanh and Mixay temples were designated car-free areas for the trial and now there are plans to extend the trial on a permanent basis most likely on Saturdays or a public holiday.
Ministry of Public Works and Transport’s Housing and Town Planning Division official, Chanthasack Bottaphanith, told Vientiane Times said the walking street gained a positive response from local residents.
inside no 3The proposal to repeat the experiment is still under consideration by the deputy mayor and his committee so, if approval is granted, the activity will be organised in the same place again.
Besides car-free streets, there is a plan to recruit assistance from the Department of Performing Arts and the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism to add displays and cultural street entertainment.
According to Mr Chanthasack, the trial attracted 7,200 local and foreign visitors during 31 January to 1 February and almost 20,000 during 7 to 8 February.
