HCMC taxi will fit tracking devices

HO CHI MINH CITY  HCMC’s Municipal Transport Department has ordered all taxis to have GPS vehicle tracking devices installed in cars no later than 1 July.
The move should improve security for tourists and end scams that have sullied the city’s reputation.
The GPS devises will monitor the route, speed, and travel time, as well as the working hours of each driver.
Taxi firms must connect the data collection live to the transport department.
Inside no.4The city’s transport department first suggested taxis should have tracking devices back in June 2013.
It is already mandatory for commercial vehicles to have tracking devices. Failure to comply carries a fine of USD90 to USD140.
Most of the taxi complaints focus on poor service and cheating.
As many as 583 taxi drivers working for different firms were fined in 2014 for rejecting passengers who were travelling a short distance to or from Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Or they demanded an additional payment.
This is a common tactic in Bangkok where taxis flatly refuse to take a fare unless the passenger pays extra on the meter.
The southern metropolis has 26 taxi firms with a fleet of 10,595 cabs.
