Phuket tighten security

PHUKET  Phuket province stepped up security measures after last week’s car bomb attack on Samui Island.
Phuket governor Nisit Chansomwong vowed to deliver the highest safety and security for tourists visiting the island, according to Thailand’s National News Bureau.
Phuket Police are inspecting all vehicles particularly pickup trucks at the only bridge that links the island to the mainland.
The Phuket governor also warned ferry operators that all ferry passengers must wear life jackets. Fire extinguishers must be in available on all tourist boats and ready to use in case of an emergency.
inside no 7His statement was in response to a recent fire on a ferry crossing from Krabi to Phuket. All passengers were rescued except for an Israeli child who perished in the fire.
Rassada Pier was packed with crowds of Thai and foreign tourists during the almost week-long Sonkhran holiday as visitors transferred to Phi Phi Island in Krabi province.
The recent tragedy prompted Police to check safety featues on all ferries, but critics of Thailand’s abysmal safety record point out that rules need to be enforced year-round, not just after a tragedy.
