Work on Chengdu’s new airport to start in 2015

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has confirmed plans to build a second airport to serve Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province. Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport is currently the fifth busiest hub in China, handling 37.5 million passengers in 2014. It is also becoming an increasingly important international gateway, with Lufthansa, BA, KLM, Etihad and Qatar Airways among the airlines that currently fly to Chengdu. Traffic is expected to surge to 62m annual passengers by 2020, exceeding Shuangliu’s current capacity of 50m. To take the strain off the 59 year-old airport, Xinhua reported the CAAC as saying that work on a brand new facility will commence by the end of this year, at a site in Jianyang, 50km southeast of Chengdu. Costing approximately CNY69.2 billion (US$11.3bn) to build, the new airport will have three runways, a 600,000m² passenger terminal and 157 aircraft stands. It is expected to handle up to 40m passengers per year by 2025. Chengdu will become only the third Chinese city to have two airports, following Shanghai and Beijing. sourced:traveldailymedia.com
