HANOI  Airlines in Vietnam will be required to pay higher compensation to passengers who suffer flight delays and cancellations on domestic flights starting 1 July.
Local media reported that a new regulation makes it obligatory for airlines to pay travellers more when their flights are cancelled or delayed by more than four hours.
The compensation rates vary for domestic flights depending on distance covered, The range is from USD9.2 to USD18.3.
The increase in compensation is stipulated in a circular promulgated by the Ministry of Transport, recently, which sets out the minimum rates carriers are required to pay to passengers when domestic flights are cancelled or delayed for over four hours.
inside no 3Passengers on a flight covering less than 500 km will be compensated with USD9.2 Two higher compensation rates, USD13.8 and USD18.3 per passenger apply to a delays or cancellation of flights on routes of more than 500 km but less than 1,000 km, while the highest rate is for travel of more than 1,000 km.
The old compensation levels ranged from USD4.6 to USD13.8.
Compensation on international routes remain unchanged at USD25 to USD150.
A compensation rate of USD25 per passenger is applied to flights of under 1,000 km, while USD50 is applicable to flight routes ranging from 1,000 km to under 2,500 km.
As for flights of 2,500 km to less than 5,000 km, the compensation is USD80 and the highest rate, USD150, applies to routes of 5,000 km or above.
The circular also stipulates that airlines are exempt from paying compensation if their flights are delayed or canceled because of weather conditions, aviation security, passengers’ health problems, government orders, technical incidents, or if passengers are properly informed of the delay 24 hours prior to takeoff.
The comprehensive list of exemptions means it is very unlikely an airline would have to pay compensation. For example technical incidents is a catch-all description that could cover just about every possibility that airlines might encounter on the ground.
