Under EarthCheck auditing, the Centre has performed above best practice in ten key areas including energy consumption, Green House Gas Emissions, Water Savings, Waste sent to Landfill and Community Contributions which, under the EarthCheck program is considered is a world-class achievement to be very highly commended.

In a first for Australian Convention Centres, BCEC developed a carbon calculator for events and introduced a raft of major environmental initiatives with significant achievements in energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and resource recovery.

BCEC General Manager, Bob O’Keeffe said environmental integrity had become fundamental to the daily operations of the Centre. “We made a strategic commitment a number of years ago now to establish our credentials as a globally responsible organisation and to build a sustainable future for our clients, our staff and our community."

“We have developed a culture at the Centre where we believe that as individuals and as an organisation we have an obligation to make choices that will reduce our impact on the environment and contribute to building more caring communities."

“We believe this is a vital part of providing a world class facility and delivering the best possible conference and event experience. It is a fundamental pillar to success,” he said.
