Loei hosts cycling event

28 May 2015  2036 | World Travel News

BANGKOK  Loei province in Northeast Thailand will welcome some 300 cyclists from Thailand and around Asia for the “Tour of I-san Loei Classic” 7 June.
Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in cooperation with Loei Provincial Administration, Life and Living Bikenet, and Nok Air, the event aims to promote green tourism in the northeast, (I-san), through a competitive cycling event.
TAT is promoting cycling as a green travel option, but the country’s road safety standards are notorious.
Four leisure cyclists were killed by reckless drivers in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, last month. There was also a wave of social medial criticism for the driver of a pick-up truck who killed an around-the-world cyclist in Northeast Thailand earlier in the year. The driver paid a fine of THB7,500.
Despite the carnage on Thai roads, thousands of leisure cyclists pursue their pastime in a country that could be a top cycling destination worldwide if it tackled its woeful road safety record. It would require a coordinated effort by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ministry of Transport and other related ministries to lift Thailand out of its second worst ranking, worldwide, in road deaths.
Government departments have to adopt a zero tollerance for road offenders especially drunk and drugged drivers.
inside no 6TAT’s executive director of the Northeast Region, Somradee Chanchai said: “The Loei Classic is one of the five routes being planned under the Tour of I-san cycling tour campaign.”
“Four other races will be organised in Bueng Kan, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Ratchathani. Each will feature a scenic cycling route that highlights key attractions in the respective province.”
“The ultimate goal is to draw more tourists to visit I-san, where an amazing diversity of traditional cultures await discovery.”
The Loei Classic is open to everyone from professionals to amateur cyclists under two categories – Road bikes and mountain bikes. The winners in both categories will be awarded with a champion’s trophy and cycling jerseys.
Applications for the race remain open to 31 May and is limited to 300 cyclists only.
The first release of information in English was issued 25 May just a week before the deadline, which gives very little time for cycling enthusiasts from Asia to register for the event by the deadline.
All race categories will start and finish at the Phu Pa Pao (mountain range), in Phu Luang district, around 30 km outside Loei town.
Loei can be reached by road (car, bus and rail,) or on daily Nok Air and Thai AirAsia flights. The province is located about 550 km northeast of Bangkok.
