Winners announced for Cathay Pacific China Business Awards 2015

Peak Scientific, University of Nottingham and Matrix APA, have been revealed as the winners of the prestigious 2015 Cathay Pacific China Business Awards, which took place at London’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Friday, 22 May 2015.

With trade opportunities between the West and China continuing to flourish, Cathay Pacific’s tenth annual China Business Awards celebrate UK and Irish business dynamism and success in China and Hong Kong.

A panel of judges made up of senior representatives from HSBC, The China Britain Business Council, The Daily Telegraph and Cathay Pacific reviewed numerous entries before choosing the three winning companies from a range of sectors spanning manufacturing, construction, education, professional services, energy and technology.

The achievements of the winning organisations were recognised at the awards ceremony by HSBC’s Group Managing Director and Chief Executive, Global Commercial Banking, Simon Cooper, and Cathay Pacific’s General Manager Europe, Angus Barclay, in front of a room of leading dignitaries from the UK, China and Hong Kong; including the Lord Wei of Shoreditch and Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Jin Xu.

The Continued Commitment Award, which recognises ongoing sustainable and ethical investment in China and/or Hong Kong, was awarded to the University of Nottingham which was founded in 1881. The University’s engagement with China through the China Initiative, is truly innovative, strategic and multi-faceted. Their work that includes the building of a China Campus; recruiting Chinese students to study in both China and the UK; developing ground breaking research capacity through China and UK research and development programmes; engagement with Chinese industry leading to commercial success; and creating social impact. Their first direct presence in China was in 2004, when The University of Nottingham Ningbo China Campus was founded, and today it employs 700 employees across the country.

Celebrating dynamic and innovative businesses that have opened operations in China within the last five years and demonstrated entrepreneurial flair, the Rising Star Award went to specialists in the design and manufacture of laboratory gas generators, Peak Scientific. Peak Scientific was established in 1997 and was first introduced to the China market in 2010 when it registered a new enterprise in Shanghai in order to provide sales support and service for Peak’s products in Great China. Peak’s products are a true example of British innovation being smaller, safer, quieter and more efficient than similar products in the market and real world alternatives to high pressure compressed gas cylinders.

Recognising initiatives from any company or not-for-profit organisation that has benefited China in a socially responsible manner, the Social Responsibility Award was given to Matrix APA – product design and procurement partners, specialising in sourcing high quality promotional products and consumer gifts from socially and ethically responsible suppliers in the Far East. They have created over 20,000 bestselling products across multiple categories for high profile brands and retailers globally, such as John Lewis, Oxfam and Inditex. With offices in both Hong Kong and Dongguan, Matrix APA works with around 100 factories training, educating and supporting their supply chain to see the great benefits of robust compliance. Matrix APA has had a positive impact on the lives of over 10,000 workers in 2014 alone.

The awards are overseen by an advisory panel which includes Ivan Chu, Chief Executive at Cathay Pacific Airways, Lord Sassoon, Chairman of CBBC, Baroness Dunn, Chairman of The Hong Kong Association, Douglas Flint, group Chairman of HSBC Holdings, Lord Wei of Shoreditch, Erica Ng, Director General at HKETO and Nicola Bolton, Managing Director for Trade at UKTI.
