The Visit Indonesia Tourism Office wishes to advise that the eruption of Mount Merapi in Central Java last week has caused only localized damage.

All small hotels and guest houses in the Kaliurang area, located about 25 kilometres north of Yogyakarta, have been closed until further notice, due to their close proximity to Mount Merapi. However all major hotels and shopping areas in Yogyakarta, the closest major city to the mountain, remain open. Some roads within the region have been affected by dust as a result of the volcanic ash however visibility is still normal and no road closures have been reported. Borobudur temple and Prambanan temple, two of Yogyakarta’s biggest tourism draw cards, are also open during normal operating hours and have experienced minimal; disruptions following Mount Merapi’s eruption.

The Yogyakarta Airport Authority advises that Yogyakarta Airport still remains open however passengers may experience some minor delays. Business in Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination, Bali is as usual and flights to the island have not been affected as a result of last week’s events.
