TCEB’s five steps to success

BANGKOK  Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau has outlined five key MICE personnel development projects in 2015.
The projects will support MICE business operators and educational institutes across the country to prepare about 20,000 new graduates to serve the MICE industry, which is expected to grow as a result of the ASEAN Economic Community.
TCEB president, Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, said in 2015 TCEB has set up a MICE Academy to build a new generation of MICE personnel, who will have skills that meet international standards.
“We are being proactive in developing education to supply high-quality personnel to serve the MICE industry in Thailand and AEC.”
inside no 3The project breaks down into five levels:
Develop a MICE curriculum “Introduction to MICE industry” (MICE 101) for educational institutions across the country;
Encourage academic exchange programmes with foreign institutions to provide a fresh perspective on the MICE industry to lecturers and students in Thailand. TCEB currently has 22 MICE institutes in six countries as partner agencies. This year, it focuses on working with partners from Japan, Germany and the United States;
Teach the teachers MICE skills and expertise so they can transfer knowledge to students effectively in the AEC era. Emphasis is placed on working closely with lecturers from the institutes that have cooperation agreements with TCEB;
Create MICE academic clusters in an online forum for MICE experts to exchange information on MICE personnel development. The programme is scheduled to start in September;
Establish a MICE Academy Day to provide opportunities for students and interested people to look for jobs, or training opportunities in the MICE businesses.
At present, there are more than 80 institutes, nationwide, that have a MICE curriculum, each of which can produce 50 to 60 new graduates annually. Altogether, an approximate of 5,000 students graduate to work in the MICE market each year.
By the end of 2015, TCEB estimates there will be around 20,000 new graduates to serve the industry.
The major short-coming is a lack of MICE students with foreign language capability. Thailand lags behind other ASEAN nations in language skills and this could seriously limit its ability to compete in the AEC era due to start end of this year.
