BANGKOK  Australians are advised by a government travel alert to “reconsider the need to travel” to Egypt.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s SmartTraveller update, issued 11 June, notes that on 10 June an attempted suicide bomb attack occurred at an archaeological site at Karnak near Luxor, Egypt, injuring four.
Investigations are underway, but the advise to travellers is to reconsider the need to visit Egypt.
The SmartTraveller Advisory Service cautionary note is based on a history of sporadic small explosions in Cairo and other parts of Egypt that have resulted in death and injury.
inside no 6The highly respected security advisory service says attacks are generally directed at security forces, but bystanders have been killed and injured in the past.
Attacks occur most commonly around government buildings at police facilities and checkpoints, in the vicinity of metro stations, on trains and at universities.
Further attacks are likely.
The travel advisory states that tourists and tourist infrastructure in South Sinai remain an attractive target for extremists.
In February 2014 a bomb explosion on a tourist bus in Taba, South Sinai, close to the Israeli border, killed four people and injured many. Travellers are warned to review their need to travel to South Sinai, including to the resort area of Sharm el Sheikh.
Those who do decide to travel to Sharm el Sheikh are “strongly encouraged to travel by air and avoid unnecessary road travel outside of Sharm el Sheikh”, the advisory explains.
