KHON KAEN Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau says it will make Khon Kaen a model for its city MICE Scheme.
TCEB accompanied its announcement with five key strategies to push meetings and exhibition and create more business opportunities in Greater Mekong Subregion.
Khon Kaen is a large commercial town and a centre for agriculture in the central part of Northeast Thailand. It is linked by major highways north-to-south and to towns in the east on the banks of the Mekong River that borders with Laos. It is also on the railway line to Nong Khai and has an airport served by all of Thailand’s low-cost airlines. It’s biggest assets for the meetings industry are its universities and government departments that are a constant source of events.
TCEB president, Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, said TCEB will empower the MICE industry in Khon Kaen in line with the Khon Kaen MICE City Model Scheme (2014 to 2018) that will promote the province as the hub of meetings and exhibitions.

Drive more MICE events to the province;
Build quality of services to meet international standards;
Establish a cooperation network within Thailand and the GMS;
Support and improve infrastructure and facilities;
Create competitive advantages for Khon Kaen to become a leader of MICE business in the GMS through brand building.
“This year, TCEB continues to build entrepreneurial capabilities and cooperation. In the next phase (2016 to 2017) TCEB will create confidence in Khon Kaen as the hub of MICE, by bringing in mega-events and strengthening international cooperation to make Khon Kaen a strong and sustainable MICE City,” the president reported.
In addition, TCEB has been operating under the domestic D-MICE market development strategy designed to promote MICE business in Khon Kaen.
One project is to upgrade the 3rd I-SAN Book Fair that draws more than 110,000 visitors. It will be hosted this August. Other events that will be hosted in Khon Kaen are Food & Hotelex Expo, and the I-SAN House & Condo fair.
Khon Kaen province vice governor, Siwaroj Mungmaiphon, said there is a budget of THB12 million to support the promotion of Khon Kaen MICE City project in the domestic market.
The budget will be used to produce guidebooks in both in Thai and English, host domestic road shows and media trips for Thai and international members of the press.
In addition, the Khon Kaen MICE City Centre was opened as an information centre to support training of MICE personnel as a preparation for the AEC.
The number of MICE travellers visiting Khon Kaen during last year was estimated at 280,440 with THB730.28 million in revenue, the bureau claimed.
Khon Kaen is one of five MICE Cities in Thailand that TCEB promotes. The others are Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya.
