YANGON Myanmar’s Ministry of Transportation has gained a USD1.93 million budget to improve several airports before 31 March 2016.
Myanmar Business Today said the funds would be used to improve domestic airports in Myitkyina, Putao, Bamaw and Naungmon in Kachin state.
During the fiscal year ending 31 March 2015, improvements were made to Myitkyina and Putao airports at a cost of USD542,000 and USD325,000. An airstrip in Naungmon was also built at a cost of USD904,000. None of the airports are strategic for mainstream tourism, but as the government attempts to diversify tourism beyond gateways some secondary airports will need to be used.
A plan to privatize 30 domestic airports has been postponed until possible 2016 due to a lack of interest by investors in the smaller airports.
inside no 4The department announced in November 2013 that it would ask for bids to manage 30 of the country’s 69 domestic airports without any success. Companies would need to upgrade the airports and invest in expansion with little chance of breaking even on their investment after 10 years.
According to the DCA airports at, Nyaung U (Bagan), Heho (Inle Lake), Thandwe, Sittwe and Dawei have potential in the long-run to attract investors.
