Airports need to know passenger priorities

BOSTON Today’s airline passengers have different priorities and airports must understand user needs to deploy resources wisely, according to the latest Strategy Analytics Relative Use Index.
The pressure to offer free Wi-Fi as an amenity to travellers has increased as US domestic airports across the country offer free connectivity, but airports need to be aware of the potential high investment costs in new technology – such as iBeacons – which will demand that airports understand passenger needs better to make informed revenue generating investment decisions.
Chief researcher of the application strategy group, Joshua Martin, commented: “For airports and airlines to decide which technology to invest in they need to understand passenger requirements.”
“Only with this insight can airports craft strategies that invest in the appropriate technologies which can be used as a competitive advantage and a direct/indirect revenue generator.”
Strategy Analytics-INFOThe research suggests that airports, worldwide, need to study carefully what their customers are looking for and what are the priority services they expect an airport to offer without charges.
In Asia, the popular option is free Wi-Fi that is easy to use and does not require a complicated registration process.
But the dominance of mobile devices that can connect to Wi-Fi hot spots offered by hosting services means passengers can use their own mobile device to connect their laptops rather than use an airport service. The same trend applies to hotels where guests often prefer to use their mobile devices to connect to the internet rather than use a hotel service even though it might be free.
