PUTRAJAYA  More emerges on the alleged panties theft at a Victoria’s Secret outlet at Penang airport, earlier in the month.
Indicating it was deadly serious about getting to the bottom of the panty theft, Tourism Malaysia issued a second update on the ongoing investigation, Thursday, saying the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) reviewed its closed circuit television (CCTV) recordings that clearly showed a theft of panties occurred, 16 June.
The scandal over missing underwear at Victoria’s Secret was first aired on a TVBS Taiwan news report that suggested a Taiwanese tourist had been accused of theft by the shop. The tourist alleged police officers demand for a bribe to close the investigation. But the TV station had the location wrong.
Tourism Malaysia said in its earlier statement that the incident occurred at Penang airport, not Langkawi as claimed by the Taiwanese TV station.
inside no 5According to airport CCTV clips panties were pocketed and there were suggestions that the incident involved three not one Taiwanese tourist.
The TV station alleged security officers demanded bribes from the tourist who claimed innocence, during the investigation. They were allowed to return to Taiwan.
In an unusually strong response to tourist crime, Tourism Malaysia chairman YBRS. EN. Wee Choo Keong said: “Whilst (we at) Tourism Malaysia welcomes quality tourists to Malaysia and (we) will do our best to make their stay as comfortable as possible and extend our warm hospitality, we will not tolerate false accusations made against Malaysia. We hope that such false allegations will not be repeated in the future.”
