HO CHI MINH CITY Ho Chi Minh City will install surveillance cameras on buses in an attempt to protect passengers from sexual harassment and pickpocketing.
Tuoi Tre News reported the installation of cameras will begin in a few months and be completed by early next year. Three security cameras will be positioned on each bus.
The cameras are mandatory for all new buses. Overall the authorities will upgrade 1,680 buses.
It will cost USD600 per bus, and another USD18.5 in monthly fees, the report said.
inside no 9The move came after the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport ordered bus companies to improve security.
Surveillance cameras will also help improve the attitude of bus drivers and their assistants, according to Nguyen Van Trieu, head of the bus company 19/5.
Meanwhile, Hanoi is still considering whether to introduce all-female buses to prevent sexual harassment against women passengers.
The Vietnam’s National Committee for Traffic Safety has recently notified Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City administration that cases of sexual harassment on buses are on the rise.
Thirty-one female students polled by a non-governmental organisation Action Aid said they had been sexually harassed on buses, the committee said in a document sent to the cities.
