Pack your bikini when visiting Danang

DANANG  “Should bikinis be compulsory beachwear on Danang’s beaches?” Apparently it is the latest hot topic after the subject was raised at a meeting in Danang, a city located in central Vietnam.
Tuoi Tre News reporting at the 14th session of the People’s Council of the coastal city, last week, quoted local authorities who noted there had been complaints that local tourists wear drab clothing, sometimes nightwear, when swimming.
Danang Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism head, Ngo Quang Vinh, said that the city has received many compliments that its beaches are clean, but most complaints from foreigners focused on local dress code for swimming. They add clothes rather than shed them a habit that mystifies foreign sun worshippers.
“Foreigners complain about Vietnamese people wearing sleepwear on the beach “instead of bikinis,” and wonder if there should be a regulation requiring beachgoers to wear two-piece swimsuits.
Ng°Ýi dân và du khách Õ ra bãi biÃn Nha Trang t¯mThe idea has triggered hot discussions between those who thought it was a great idea and those who claimed it was contrary to Vietnamese culture to strip down to swim.
Some even said that wearing sleepwear at the beach was “progress” as many Vietnamese people used to swim fully clothed in the past, the report said.
Danang’s tourism department is recommending zoned beaches for those who wear bikinis, according to VietnamNet Bridge media report.
“In the near future tourism service providers will set up an area for tourists who wear bikinis, or they might organise bikini shows on the beach to increase awareness,” the tourism department head said.
Nothing was said about male swim dress code for beaches, but it was assumed the bikini discussion was focused on what female beachgoers should wear.
Critics said it would be better to concentrate on other pressing matters and allow people to wear what made them comfortable at the beach without zoning or regulations.
In 2014, Danang received nearly 3.8 million tourists, a 21.9% rise against last year. Of that, 955,000 were foreign tourists, while domestic visitors reached 2.8 million.
This year, the city targets 4.5 million tourists including 1.5 million foreign tourists.
