New Zealand has opened its first and only museum of contemporary art.

Located in North Island city of New Plymouth, the new Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is set in a modern stainless steel building.

Described as a “temple for art”, the museum will showcase the work of Len Lye, a New Zealand artist whose diverse portfolio ranged from kinetic sculpture to film, painting, drawing, photography, batik and writing. It will also feature related works by other contemporary and historical artists.

In addition, the centre will house a state-of-the-art 62-seat cinema, screening Lye’s films plus a series of arthouse and experimental movies and regular film festival programmes.

Len Lye, who died in 1980, gifted his entire collection of more than 18,000 items to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
