KAYIN STATE Kayin State will be the first state to officially establish bed and breakfast accommodation in Myanmar even before nation-wide licensing is in place for guest houses .
The state government has approved two of seven applications to open a B&B at Thandaunggyi, a colonial-era hill station in northern Kayin State about a 90-minute drive east of Taungoo.
Myanmar Times quoted Kayin State Minister for Planning and Economy, U Naing Min Soe Thein, saying the regional government had written to Nay Pyi Taw requesting permission to open two B&Bs.
Seven companies applied for a B&B licence at Thandaunggyi, of which two have so far been approved by the state government. They are Grace for Grace, with eight rooms and I Wish, with seven rooms.
inside no 1Hotels and Tourism Department in Kayin State head, U Win Kyaw, said the five other applicants will continue with the process and licensing requirements. They must have between four and eight rooms of an appropriate standard to eligible for B&B approval. Those that meet the requirements will be granted a license on a one-year probation period.
“Thandaunggyi is the first place to get B&B, but the state government will consider other other places in he future,” he said.
According to Ministry of Hotels and Tourism in Nay Pyi Taw, the draft tourism law that contains licensing provisions for B&Bs has not been ratified.
Under existing rules, only establishments with a hotel license can accept foreign guests. A hotel is defined as an establishment with more than eight rooms, which excludes guest houses and results in some smaller destinations having few or no accommodation options recognised by the authorities. The objective of the tourism law is to ensure all tourism and hospitality suppliers comply with certain quality standards and are made accountable to pay taxes.
Kayin State shares borders with Mae Hong Son, Tak, and Kanchanaburi provinces in Thailand to the east; Mon State and Bago Region to the west and south; Mandalay Region, Shan State and Kayah State to the north.
