Thailand first half looks good

BANGKOK  International tourist arrivals to Thailand posted an improvement of 29.54%, January to June, this year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ latest data.
Released late last week, the ministry’s data showed the country attracted 14,861,443 international visits during the first six months of the year up from 11,472,881 visits during the same period last year.
Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, said Thailand is now moving to improve the country tourism links with neighbouring countries.
“The ministry had already signed an agreement on tourism cooperation with five neighbours and near-neighbours within ASEAN– Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam–for ASEAN connectivity project.”

THAILAND/ Her comments came just days after tourism officials in Si Sa Ket, northeast Thailand, said they backed a project to build a replica or clone of Preah Vihear temple in Cambodia, a move that would conflict with efforts to link tourism between both countries.
The six nations have also mapped out tourism marketing strategies aimed mainly at promoting each country’s history and highlighted natural sites, she said.
She added: “We plan to launch new routes consisting of unspoiled and uncovered products located in each country.”
Tourism has continued to bounce back from a sharp fall in 2014 during months of street protests and a military coup.
In June alone, there were 2,282,645 international visits, an increase of 53.06% when compared to 1,491,300 visits during the same month last year.
By regions, all markets recorded increases except Europe and Middle East in the sixth month of the year.
East Asia (ASEAN included) reported an increase of 82.87% from 912,228 to 1,668,229 visits.
The markets that showed improvements were: China (+187.03%); Vietnam (+119.60%); Hong Kong (+106.37%); Taiwan (+92.77%); Malaysia (+77.14%); South Korea (+40.04%); Singapore (+35.50%); Japan (+28.43%); Laos (+22.79%); Myanmar (+12.70%); Cambodia (+12.25%); Indonesia (+8.01%); and Brunei (+5.49%).
The Philippines was the only market that showed a decline of 9.66%.
The Americas posted a 28.80% increase from 70,252 to 90,487 visits. Argentina reported a 73.01% increase from 752 to 1,301.
The United States recorded the highest arrivals at 67,891 up 29.64% from 52,370 followed by Canada (13,831; +22.06%) and Brazil (2,799; +31.10%).
South Asia represented a 16.06% increase from 107,598 to 124,876 visits. India led the field supplying 99,525 visits growing 23.25% from 80,751 followed by Bangladesh (6,837; -9.20%), Pakistan (6,834; -24.24%), Sri Lanka (5,656; +21.69%), and Nepal (2,625; +23.70%).
Oceania supplied a 6.01% increase from 78,787 to 83,522 visits. The main market New Zealand improved 10.96% (10,155) and Australia increased5.30% (73,099).
Africa recorded a growth of 4.14% from 11,302 to 11,770 visits. The main market South Africa improved 19.19% from 6,231 to 5,228.
In contrast, Europe represented a slowdown of 1.66% from 276,386 to 271,791 visits. The markets recording declines were: Russia (-34.54%); Austria (-9.36%); Norway (-6.43%); Denmark (-6.15%); and Ireland (-4.09%).
The markets that showed improvements were: Spain (+39.59%); Italy (+16.05%); Switzerland (+14.49%); France (+12.23%); UK (+8.79%); the Netherlands (+7.85%); Germany (+6.56%); Finland (+2.57%); Sweden (+2.20%); East Europe (+0.73%); and Belgium (+0.00%).
The Middle East dropped 7.99% from 34,747 to 31,970 visits. The United Arab Emirates led the field with 5,475 visits down 19.37% from 6,790 visits. Other main markets: Israel (5,472; +13.08%); Kuwait (3,514; -2.25%); Egypt (1,050; -33.29%); and Saudi Arabia (884; -5.35%).
