Western India takes center-stage at SATTE Mumbai West 2015

MUMBAI - UBM India, organisers of South Asia's leading travel trade show, SATTE, flagged off the 4th edition of SATTE Mumbai West at the World Trade Centre, Mumbai. The two-day event (18-19 August) was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Ram Shinde, Minister of State, Maharashtra.

SATTE Mumbai West, catering primarily to the travel trade community of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa, saw participation from national and international tourism boards, DMCs, travel agents and tour operators, airlines, OTAs, hotels and resorts and IT companies, among others. Niche product and service providers from the industry will also participate to connect with potential business aides and build stronger partnerships within the region through this platform.

Shri Ram Shinde, State Tourism Minister, Government of Maharashtra at the inauguration said, "I would, first and foremost, like to congratulate UBM India for this successful event. Events such as SATTE are unique opportunities for the tourism industry and its stakeholders. We always look forward to avenues for growth and increased awareness, and I take this opportunity to introduce Maharashtra. Once again I thank everyone here, and SATTE Mumbai West, for giving me an opportunity to present Maharashtra. I look forward to tie ups across boundaries to increase Maharashtra's tourism numbers."

Key exhibitors Rajasthan Tourism, Maharashtra Tourism, Chhattisgarh Tourism, Uttar Pradesh Tourism, Jharkhand Tourism, Madhya Pradesh Tourism, Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, ENIT Italian National Tourist Board, Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Fiji, Neemrana Hotels, OyoRooms, ZO Rooms, Interglobe Aviation Ltd. (Indigo), Internet Moguls, Tea Estate India, Grade One Events, and United Travels and Tours from Singapore, amongst others showcased some of the latest destinations and offerings at the trade show.

Yogesh Mudras, Acting Managing Director, UBM India, said, "India's western region comprises of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and adjoining areas that receives over 10% domestic and 25% foreign visits, as per industry reports. Furthermore, Mumbai, apart from being the financial capital and the gateway to western India, has emerged as the only Indian entry in the Asia Pacific to figure in the top 10 fast growing cities by international overnight visitors, according to the Global Destination Cities Index chart. As many as 4.75 million people have stayed overnight in Mumbai during the first half of this year which is likely to record the highest number of international visitors who stopped by in the city in the past five years. SATTE Mumbai West is aptly poised to offer ample opportunities to the travel trade community to further push their business and tap the potential of this city and the region's tourism market."

The sessions at the conference further highlighted Mumbai as an established gateway, and brought to the forefront the emergence of tier II cities such as Surat, Nasik and Nagpur as major emerging markets in the region.

The first panel discussion, Western India: Untapped Domestic Tourism?, discussed the pressing issues that plague domestic tourism, a sector that is growing exponentially year on year. Moderated by Murari Mohan Jha, and a panel comprising Satish Soni, Joint MD, MTDC; Pawan Jain, Deputy Director (Investments), Rajasthan Tourism; Abhijit Patil, Chairman, Raja Rani Travels; Yusuf Poonawala, Head - Bharat Dekho, Cox & Kings, Pandurang Taware, Managing Director, Agri Tourism Development Corporation the discussion touched upon the efforts being taken by both public and private sectors to further boost domestic movement.

The second panel discussion, Mumbai: Are we utilizing the optimum potential of the Indian Outbound?, focused on the best practices to further boost outbound tourism from India. Moderated by Ajay Prakash, Founder President, IIPT India, the panel consisted of Sheetal Munshaw Wadhwa, Director, Atout France India; Carl Vaz, Director, Dubai DTCM; Sudhir Patil, Founder & MD, Veena World and Karan Anand, Head - Relationships, Cox & Kings. The esteemed panelists debated the best ways to position destinations to the Indian traveller, as well as further outbound so as to catapult this segment of tourism to its pinnacle.

The show has been well received by the industry and supported by the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), The Association of Tourism Trade Organisations, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI) and Travel Agents Association of Nasik.
