TAT welcomes 20th million visitor

BANGKOK  Thailand’s visitor arrivals surged by 1 million in just 10 days marked by the arrival of the country’s 20th million visitor Thursday.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand claims it showed that the widely projected temporary downturn in arrivals following the 17 August attack at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok had failed to materialise.
The 20 millionth visitor, Shoji Omori from Japan, was given the traditional surprise welcome at Suvarnabhumi Airport by executives and representatives of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways International, the Immigration Bureau, Airports of Thailand and True Corporation.
The 19 millionth visitor was welcomed at Phuket International Airport, 16 August, while the 20th million visitor arrived 10 days later in Bangkok, 26 August, eight days after the Erawan Shrine bombing.
As part of a “Green Season” marketing strategy that began 30 June, every millionth visitor to the country has been welcomed at Thailand’s international aviation gateways. The campaign ends 30 September.

The milestone indicates an average of 100,000 visitors passed through immigration checkpoints in Thailand for the 10-day period.
The lucky visitors receive two economy-class return air tickets from their international port of origin to Thailand along with a five-night accommodation voucher, a “Thailand’s Luckiest Visitor” certificate as well as other prizes from TAT’s project partners. The trips have a validity period of one year.inside-no-7.1The programme designed to support the “2015 Discover Thainess” umbrella campaign aims to highlight the charm of Thailand as well as the friendliness of its people.

TAT deputy governor for international marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) Juthaporn Rerngronasa said: “Hitting the 20th million visitor mark is particularly important because it clearly indicates that arrivals have been virtually unaffected by the 17 August (bomb)attack. This is a very good sign indeed.”
“If this pace continues, we are likely to exceed our projection of 28.8 million visitors in 2015.”
TAT said earlier that it had stopped emphasising a tourist head count and would base its performance indicators on tourism revenue and length of stay.
