China mulls “hyperloop” link for Beijing-Shanghai

China is considering plans to develop an ultra-high-speed “hyperloop” link between Beijing and Shanghai. The hyperloop would shoot passengers through a 1,500km tube

The China Daily reported US-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) as saying that it is in discussions with “certain parties in China” about the hyperloop project.

The hyperloop concept would shoot passengers through a long tube between Beijing and Shanghai at the speed of sound. This would cut the journey time for the 1,500km trip to just one hour – half the current flight time.

“Each tube can transport 24 million people a year and we plan to have seven tubes. Basically, we can transport seven times more people from Beijing to Shanghai than flights,” Bibop G. Gresta, deputy chairman of HTT, was quoted saying at the Global Innovator Conference in Beijing.

“We have started discussions, but we can’t disclose with whom,” he added.
