Pattaya: Rain stops play

BANGKOK  Both Pattaya and Bangkok suffered heavy rains and flooding, earlier this week, causing a spate of last-minute holiday cancellations.
Floods were clearing in Pattaya, late Thursday and hoteliers were hoping that storms would clear by the weekend when Bangkok residents visit the resort for a weekend break.
However, the Thai Meteorological Department warns that a low pressure cell will continue to cover the central and eastern regions of the country with a strong southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The department said widespread rain is expected across the central and southern regions of the country. Residents and tourists should be aware of severe weather conditions that could disrupt travel, especially boat trips.

Strong wind and waves are expected, two to three metres high, in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. All ships should proceed with caution.
Pattaya officials said the floods were receding and the motorway was cleared of water by mid-Thursday.
Some 380 tourists, who were stranded on Lan island, off the coast of Pattaya, have now returned by ferry boats to the resort.
Four ferries were sent by the Marine Department office in Pattaya to pick up the stranded holidaymakers on Wednesday. Meanwhile a ban on all seafaring activity remains in place through to the weekend.
Tropical depression Vamco caused heavy seas and torrential rain that reduced visibility and made boat trips extremely dangerous.
Red flags remain posted along beaches on all of Pattaya’s beaches and at the Bali Hai Pier due to gusty winds and high waves. All boats are prohibited from leaving their moorings, while Pattaya Municipality is on a red alert to tackle flash floods.
On Wednesday, a large part of Pattaya was knee-deep in water and traffic was brought to a standstill for about three hours as a result of the tropical depression Vamco which swept across the eastern region and the central plains.
