Vientiane installs CCTVs

VIENTIANE Vientiane Traffic Police Department will install more Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras throughout the city to improve safety and security measures.
The department’s deputy director, Lieutenant Colonel Bounmark Soundalay, told Vientiane Times there are now over 200 CCTV cameras along roads in Vientiane, but it was still insufficient so more cameras will be installed in potentially risky areas.
Vientiane is considered one of the safest capital cities in Asia, but following the Erawan Shrine bombing incident in Bangkok, authorities are keen to show that the Lao capital is closing every possible blind spot in the city’s CCTV network.

“CCTV surveillance will play a vital role to improve safety for tourists. The cameras are likely to be more use tackling violent crimes in tourist districts possibly reducing theft and bag snatching,” a police official told local media.
The capital attracted 1.6 million tourists last year up 14.29% from 1.4 million in 2013, according to Tourism Development Department data.
