BANGKOK Association of Thai Travel Agents’ member companies handled 3,361,114 international tourists at Suvarnabhumi Airport, January to October, representing an increase of 51.19% from 2,223,131 visits during the same period last year.
ATTA released its data, Tuesday, based on fees member agencies pay to the airport to provide a meet-and-greet service for international clients.
ATTA president, Charoen Wangananont, said both gateway airports in Bangkok saw more tourists arriving on itineraries managed by members companies.
“Asia and ASEAN will play a key role to boost the tourism industry…once the ASEAN Economic Community starts at the end of this year it should encourage more travel from neighbouring countries.”
Vietnam tourists are now the second source of business for the association’s members, while China remains the top source.
For the first 10 months of the year, China led with an improvement of 153.54% from 686,864 visits to 1,741,505 visits.
Vietnam followed in second place with an increase of 235.18% from 49,992 to 167,563 visits.
The next top markets were: India (153,733: +22.00%); Russia (148,820; -65.68%); and South Korea (119,747; +48.94%).

inside no 1In October alone, there were 247,714 foreign tourists who travelled with association members, down 13.71% from 287,086 visits during the same month in 2014. The Erawan Shrine bomb attack, 17 August, was blamed for the decline in bookings to the capital city.
China was the top source in October with 121,674 visits growing 114.64% from 56,687 visits.
Although showing a decline of 73.55%, Russia ranked second in October with 16,438 visits compared to 62,154 visits during the same month last year.
India was placed third recording 13,760 visits up 6.34% from 12,940 visits.
South Korea, in fourth place, posted 12,022 visits down 2.16% from 12,288 visits, while Japan (fifth) with 7,270 visits declined 64.45% from 20,451 visits.
Other markets in the top 10 were: the United Kingdom (6,740; +41.27%); Vietnam (6,227; -26.44%); Germany (4,026; -11.50%); Taiwan (3,171; -71.45%); and the United States (2,922; +26.66%).
The association also reported there were 93,089 tourists who were handled by member companies at Don Mueang Airport in October, an increase of 45.90% from 63,804 during the same month last year.
China also topped the arrivals at the second gateway recording 81,960 visits improving 48.98% from 55,013 visits.
Indonesia was second with 4,456 visits growing 0.41% from 4,438 visits during the same month last year.
Malaysia ranked third recording 1,644 visits, an increase of 34.42% from 1,223 visits.
India was in fourth place with 1,502 visits up 75.88% from 854, while Vietnam was in fifth place with 837 visits up 14.97% from 728 visits.
The remaining markets in the top 10 were: South Korea (636; +1,451.22%); Japan (548; +54.80%); Myanmar (310; +127.94%); Taiwan (247; +100.00%); Singapore (123; -28.49%).
ATTA opened its second office at Don Mueang Airport, 1 August last year, to offer meet-and-greet services for member travel agents.
ATTA members handled 4,316,917 clients at both airports during January and October increasing 81.51% from 2,378,303 visits during the same period last year.
