Following explosions in public areas in some provinces during 11-12 August, 2016, Prime MinisterPrayut Chan-o-cha has instructed local authorities to step up security at key locations throughout Thailand as preventive measure and to ensure safety and security for tourists and local residents.

These Incidents are currently under police investigation. And while it is not yet known who is behind the blasts, or if the attacks are linked, an investigation is in process. Meanwhile planned events and business events activities continue in Thailand as the nation celebrated the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Mother’s Day today (12 August, 2016).

International stakeholders are advised that Thailand’s MICE industry continues to operate as normal, and all public and private sector stakeholders are working together to monitor the situation. All hotels, venues and attractions are open and ready to welcome business travellers. Transportation links, major roads and airports continue to operate, including Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain and MRT services and both Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi International Airports. However travellers are advised to prepare adequate travelling time to avoid getting caught in traffic due to large movements of people during this long-weekend holiday period.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) domestic offices have been assigned to look after the welfare of injured tourists and to facilitate support services for all foreign and Thai visitors in their area. The offices will provide assistance and coordinate with local authorities as needed.

TAT and Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) are monitoring and assessing the tourism situation and will be providing further details as the situation develops. In the meantime, both organisations encourage travellers to obtain information from various sources to get a balanced understanding about the reality on the ground in Thailand, so that they can plan their trips accordingly.

UNWTO strongly condemns the attacks perpetrated in Thailand

On ther same time, on behalf of the international tourism community, UNWTO conveys its heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims and to the Thai people.

We are fully confident that this will continue to be the case and we look forward to meet in Bangkok next 27 September for the official World Tourism Day celebrations".

"More than ever we need to work together to make a great success out of the celebrations of World Tourism Day, this will be the best expression of support and union against these hideous acts." said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.
