BANGKOK Deputy prime minister for legal affairs, Wissanu Krea-ngarm, has confirmed that the mourning period in Thailand will go on for at least one year as earlier announced.

The minister said the country will mourn the death of the much beloved monarch for at least a year, so that the public has enough time to grieve.

He took this opportunity to deny rumours that the newly-appointed Regent pro tempore, Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, has the power to name a candidate to succeed King Bhumibol, saying such rumours were groundless.

He said because the Crown Prince has asked to join the nation to mourn his father the King’s passing, Gen Prem will be the caretaker of the country’s monarchy for the time being.
