PERTH - Crown Perth’s very own apprentice chef, Angela Fairfield has taken out bronze at the World IKA Culinary Olympics in Germany this week, shining alongside fierce competition in the Open Culinary Art Margarine category.

Representing Crown as part of the WA Culinary Youth Team, Angela joined over 1,500 chefs from 40 countries at the event and impressed the judging panel with an extraordinary 28 kilogram dragon sculpture carved from margarine.

Sculptures in the category were judged based on scale, proportion, imperfections, how well the sculpture matches the description provided and the level of support within the carving.

Participating in what is considered as the world’s most elite culinary competition is a significant achievement for the 20-year-old, who was invited to compete in the Culinary Olympics after winning gold at the 2015 Oceanafest in the Cold Food Decorations category.

Crown Perth Executive Chef, Ralf Vogt, said to receive an accolade like this on the world stage is a tremendous career highlight and a reflection of the young chef’s passion, commitment and hard-work.

“Angela has demonstrated not only great skill, but an incredible work-ethic throughout this experience. Having dedicated countless hours to crafting the sculpture which had to be frantically repaired after it was damaged in transit, Angela rose to the challenge and has made us all incredibly proud,” said Chef Ralf.

Angela’s artistic passion flared in high-school where she studied in York and Northam, receiving the opportunity to gain practical experience working with materials such as clay.

Completing work experience at Crown Perth in 2013, Angela has been a part of the resort's award-winning apprentice program since February 2014 and has developed a range of skills working in six kitchens including The Merrywell, Market & Co, Carvers, Snax, Junction Grill, Banquets, and Modo Mio.

During her apprenticeship, Angela also won the WA Regional Final of the Nestle Golden Chefs Hat Awardand went on to represent Crown at the National Final in Melbourne from 11-15 September this year.

Evidence of the apprentice program’s success, Crown Resorts is a finalist in the 2016 Australian Training Awards in the Australian Apprenticeships - Employer Award category, which will take place on 17 November.

Crown Perth was also proudly awarded the WA and Australian Employer of the year in 2015. The Training Awards are the peak state and national awards for the vocational education and training (VET) sector, recognising outstanding individuals, businesses and registered training organisations for their contribution to employee development in Australia.
