Salavan opens natural attractions

SALAVAN The southern Lao province of Salavan is preparing to open up an area of Phouphasouk mountain to tourism this April.

New attractions will include caves and a waterfall and authorities say they will open them to tourists as early at the Lao New Year holiday in mid-April.

Vientiane Times reported the site is located at Phouphasouk mountain about 20 km from the provincial capital.

It can be reached by driving along Road No 15B before turning right onto a dirt road and driving for another 10 km.

The province’s Information, Culture and Tourism Department director, Somchai Ounchit, was quoted saying the authorities are now preparing huts, boats and other facilities at the site.

“We have also prepared access to the site and have created a smooth-topped dirt road.”

The special attractions of the area are four caves named Kaleng, Thamdin 1 and 2, and Tham Nanglod. Nearby is the Namlod waterfall and a reservoir where boat trips and other activities can be enjoyed, he added.

Opening new visitor attractions is considered a priority for the province as tourism is viewed as essential to generate revenue and improve the local economy that relies almost entirely on agriculture.

This year, the department also plans to survey potential tourist sites and to develop four additional visitor attractions.

Currently, the province has 91 officially designated tourist sites, of which 49 are of interest to nature lovers, 36 are cultural and six historical. However, only six of all the sites are open to the public, the report said.
