HO CHI MINH CITY, Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Transport has asked for approval from the Ministry of Transport to use English on street signs to help tourists find their way around.
Local media reported that the city’s transport department wanted to have all street signs in Vietnamese and English.
Some tour companies suggested it would be more convenient if the signs also had Chinese characters.
Examples of the street signs are currently being displayed at the department’s headquarters at 63 Ly Tu Trong Street in District 1, where members of the public can offer feedback.
Urban Traffic Management No 1’s director, Nguyen Vinh Ninh, said comments and feedback from residents, experts and scholars would be considered before a final bilingual design is presented for final approval.
The Southern Transportation Development and Research Centre former head, Tran Doan Phi Anh, said large cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Danang need to have signs in foreign languages as there are many tourists visiting.
