Taxi drivers told to behave

BANGKOK The Land Transport Department has asked taxi drivers to improve their manners after some drivers set about a car driver they suspected was an Uber of Grab member.

The incident that occurred at the weekend could have turned nasty.

Taxi drivers besieged the driver at Chiang Mai airport, which is under the management of the Airports of Thailand.

They believed he was participating in the ride-share business, either picking, up or dropping off a passenger.

They were mistaken, but that didn’t stop the incident dominating social media posts, further damaging the already poor image of Thailand’s registered taxi drivers.

The Land Transport Department said taxi drivers should concentrate on offering service quality, while urging them to report the discovery of any unlicensed drivers of shared driver services, to officials who would investigate complaints.

Uber and Grab are not recognised by law in Thailand and the Land Transport Department would have to create new regulations to govern ride-sharing. There have been incidents reported in Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket where taxi drivers threatened suspected Uber and Grab members.

Land Transport Department director-general, Sanit Promwong, told the National News Bureau that officials offered an apology to the driver  and his passenger after it was confirmed that there was no connection to a shared driver service.
