Dreamliner issues an ANA nightmare

24 Jul 2012  2045 | World Travel News

Less than a year after welcoming the first Boeing 787 into its fleet, All Nippon Aireays (ANA) has revealed that up to five of its Dreamliner jets are under repair after locating an engine defect.

The carrier announced last week it had grounded the five planes after receiving an announcement from Rolls-Royce outlining a problem with the gearbox found during endurance tests, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Immediately cancelling two domestic flights to deal with the issue last week, a spokesperson told media that a total of seven engines in five aircraft were exchanged.

Since, two Dreamliners have returned to action.

"We have identified that a component on Trent 1000 engines fitted to Boeing 787 Dreamliners has a reduced service life," Rolls-Royce spokeperson said.

"This component is being replaced in a number of engines.

“We are working hard to minimise disruption to customer operations."

The engine manufacturer added that no other airline had been affected by the issue.
