Airline takes couple to the wrong continent

A travelling couple’s African getaway ended up as a Bangladesh bust after a mix up in airport codes sent the pair 7,000 miles away from their destination.

Husband and wife Triet Vo and Sandy Valdiviseo were intending to fly from Los Angeles to Dakar via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines late last year, but instead found themselves in a completely different continent when the airport code for Dakar - DKR was replaced with Dhaka – DAC, Los Angeles Times reported.

According to the couple, they boarded the connecting flight after arriving in Istanbul, but only realised they were heading to the wrong destination after taking notice of the inflight route map, which showed the plane flying over the Middle East.

“When the flight attendant said we were heading to Dhaka, we believed that this was how you pronounced 'Dakar' with a Turkish accent," Ms Valdivieso explained.

Shortly after arriving the Bangladesh, the couple advised Turkish Airlines of the error, but according to reports, the airline would only acknowledge the incident after the pair supplied a recording of the initial booking.

The couple were then placed on flights to West Africa, but their baggage took an extra two days to arrive in Senegal.

Ms Valdivieso said she’d kept the incident under wraps since December last year because she wanted to secure compensation for their travel misfortune and were recently offered two free economy-class tickets to anywhere on the carrier’s flight network.

"We are very, very sorry that this happened," a Turkish Airlines spokeswoman said.
