Backpacker conference in South Australia next week

ATEC’s 8th annual Backpacker and Youth Industry Conference (BYIC) will take place in Adelaide next week (4 June) with delegates attending from across Australia.
 
“ATEC is pleased to be hosting this event in Adelaide which recognises the significant and growing youth market segment and the contribution it is making to the overall tourism economy,” ATEC Managing Director, Felicia Mariani said today.
 
“With more than 1.5 million youth travellers coming to Australian each year, this segment has rightly been recognised by Tourism Australia in its latest marketing campaign and BYIC is helping to share understanding and build industry capacity to connect with these visitors.
 
“We know these visitors stay longer, spend more and disperse more widely than regular travellers making them a particularly important market for many regional industry operators.
 
“Through this conference ATEC is offering a program that provides insights and analysis and presents some of the key issues affecting youth travel internationally.”
 
The Conference’s keynote speaker is the internationally acclaimed founder of G Adventures, Bruce Poon Tip, who will look at the changing youth consumer and how business models must change to meet their needs.

Mr Poon Tip has an impressive industry background having spoken on sustainability in tourism at the 2010 TED Whistler, TED Bangkok and TEDx Toronto events, as well as by invitation from the Prince of Wales International Business Leaders’ Forum to present at the inaugural United Nations World Tourism Organization Seminar on Ethics in Tourism.

Having presented at the UNWTO Conference on Climate Change and Tourism in Switzerland, the Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference in the USA and addressed the UN World Tourism Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development, Mr Poon Tip’s Conference address will look at how sustainability has played a vital role in the evolution of today’s international traveller.
