BEIJING - Sharjah added yet another feather to its cap today by winning the prestigious Most Outstanding Tourism Pavilion Award for its distinct participation in the Beijing International Tourism Expo 2013 with the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority hosting a number of meetings and interactions with leading figures of the Chinese and Asian tourism industry, investors and visiting media delegations.  This is the seventh such award in Sharjah’s eight years of successful association with the Beijing exhibition, held from June 21 to 23 at the China National Convention Center.

Meanwhile on the sidelines of the exhibition, HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, received HE Lu Long, Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, and expressed his happiness at the fact that the Chinese interest in Sharjah’s tourism sector and the economy is growing by the day which is reflected in the significant growth of the number of Asian tourists and investments in the emirate.

“This places greater responsibility on all stake holders in Sharjah’s tourism sector to step up their efforts to take advantage of these growing opportunities and markets,” said Al Noman.

For his part, HE Lu Yong praised the development Sharjah has been witnessing at various levels, and became a unique cultural family tourism destination. He stressed on the importance of boosting the tourism relations between Sharjah and Beijing, and benefiting from such exhibitions to increase the tourism and commerce exchange between both destinations.

The SCTDA Chairman held similar productive meetings with prominent business leaders, media and representatives of the region’s travel and tourism industry. They discussed ways of developing future cooperation between China and Sharjah and promote tourism and economic relations between the two destinations.

Al Noman said that Chinese investments and tourist inflow into the emirate have been steadily growing and augur well for the future and economy of the emirate. He said that the economic relations between China and the UAE and Sharjah today occupy a privileged position and are considered a successful model for economic cooperation between the nations. “This special relationship is progressing on an ascending track and reflects a genuine desire for progress on both sides,” said Al Noman.

The Chinese investments in Sharjah crossed Dh100 million in 2012 with more than 120 Chinese companies specialising in building materials, furniture, clothes and fabrics, electronic and chemical industries now operating in the emirate.  Pointing out that China is the largest and fastest growing tourism and economic market in the world today, Al Noman said it is important for both the public and private sector stake holders of the emirate to exploit and build on this massive potential and opportunity.

With more than 20 million tourists a year, a figure that is projected to cross 100 million by 2020, the Chinese market offers immense potential, emphasised the SCTDA Chairman.

Sharjah and the UAE are home to a vibrant Chinese business community and there are strong trade, economic and tourism relations between China and the emirate. Besides hosting a dedicated exhibition for Chinese products and companies, Sharjah recently opened an attractive China market. The China Town Center development includes over 200 stores stocking products from 300 Chinese companies and factories. Last year the number of Asian and Chinese visitors to Sharjah stood at 227,554 representing 13 per cent of the emirate’s total tourist population. In the first quarter of 2013, this has gone up slightly and constitutes 14 per cent of Sharjah’s total share of tourists.

The Sharjah delegation to Beijing includes Radisson Blu Resort and Sharjah Museums Department among others. As in the past, the visitors to the Beijing exhibition were provided a comprehensive overview of Sharjah and tourism and investment opportunities offered by the emirate with the help of promotional literature in both English and Chinese. Representing government entities and travel and tourism industry players, the SCTDA is taking part in the strategic Beijing exhibition for the eighth year. The Sharjah delegation led by the SCTDA included representatives of Sharjah Museums Department, Radisson Blu Resort, SATA and Al Alam Travel Agency among others.

This is the seventh award Sharjah has earned itself at the Beijing exhibition. The emirate won the award in the Best Designed Pavilion category in 2007, 2008 and 2011 and the Most Outstanding Pavilion Award in 2009, 2010 and 2012, recognizing its excellence of presence and participation in international forums.
