Snacks first, Sex later, say Singapore Vacationers

SINGAPORE – Singaporean beachgoers are the most gluttonous travellers in the world, according to Expedia’s 2013 Flip Flop Report global survey. In this study, 65% of Singaporeans surveyed confessed that they would eat more than they normally would. Only one in two (53%) would get intimate with their partner during the vacation, while a mere 9% said they would get intimate with a stranger, one of the lowest rankings globally!
Expedia reportOn the flip side, neighbouring Malaysia appears to be on the other end of the intimacy chart. Bucking the trend reported by Asia-Pacific’s beachgoers, 69% of Malaysians surveyed said that their first priority would be to get intimate with their partner during the vacation, with another 20% having no qualms about getting intimate with a stranger. These findings have placed Malaysia at the top for both choices globally.
Expedia’s 2013 Flip Flop Report is an analysis of the behaviour and preferences among beachgoers around the world. Conducted from 19 April to 15 May 2013, the online study spans across North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. It reveals the behaviour and attitudes towards beach vacations of over 8,000 travellers above 18 years old in 21 countries, with 305 Singaporean participants.
“Living in a country that is close to some of Asia’s best beaches and food, it is heartening to see so many Singaporeans favoring their holidays by the sea. It is no wonder that Singaporeans choose to indulge their appetites in the wide choice of cuisine available in the region. On top of that, they get to spend their leisure moments at the beach with its idyllic setting and serene beauty. There are many ways to enjoy the seaside and they certainly know how to make the most of their beach holidays,” said Kathleen Tan, CEO, AirAsiaExpedia.
The Expedia Flip Flop Report also showed that Singaporeans are a digitally savvy bunch, coming in top 5 across the world (70%) to have booked their beach vacations online. “It is fortunate that Singaporeans are spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday options available. Amongst some of our top destinations booked, beach vacations make up half these bookings. With exciting beach holiday packages backed by a best price guaranteed policy, Expedia.com.sg offers Singaporean travellers the perfect opportunity to get away for some much needed fun and sun," added Kathleen.
With more than 80% of Singaporeans ready to bask in the sun and relax on sand, the survey also showed what a beach vacation means to them and their Asian neighbours.
Looking good is everything!
Many Singaporeans are determined to lose their last bit of excess weight right before they go on their holiday. 29% of them have indicated that they work out before their vacation, higher than regional average of 27%. Not to put that good figure to waste, 39% will also buy new beach outfit and 14% will go for a sun tan to flaunt their beach-ready body.
Another surprising finding from the study showed that 29% of Singaporean beachgoers have gone nude or topless on a beach before, higher than the global average of 27%. Singaporeans are not so conservative after all!
The sun, the sand & the savvy
Beach holidays are made for fantastic photo and video opportunities. When asked about ways to share beach memories, holiday-makers from India, Malaysia and Singapore are the most connected to their social media platforms. 34% of Singaporeans indicate that they will share their videos online and 56% state they will share photos on various social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That is 1 in 2 Singaporeans! In addition, 17% will blog about their experiences during their beach vacation.
Accommodation and facilities complete a good holiday venue
Across Asia-Pacific countries, sun-worshippers have ranked cost, new location and weather predictability as most important factors when planning where to go on a beach vacation. However, more than half in India, South Korea and Malaysia have cited children and family-friendly activities as important in their list. 49% of Singaporeans and more than half of Malaysian surveyed prefer all-inclusive resorts compared to other types of hotels as their choice of accommodation during a beach holiday.
People love the beach
This study reveals that the popularity of the beach is still unsurpassed. Two-thirds (64%) indicate they are either very or somewhat likely to take a beach vacation in the next 12 months. Holidaymakers in Brazil (87%) and the Asia Pacific (71%) are more likely to take a beach vacation in the next 12 months than those in Europe (57%) or North America (55%).
Best Price Guaranteed Packages
The report confirms that one of the most important factors when it comes to booking a beach holiday is cost.  Booking the perfect beach getaway with the right price has never been easier! Expedia’s Best Price Guaranteed promotion promises to rescue you from your holiday blues with unbelievably priced travel packages.
