JAKARTA- Thai BTS Group Holdings formed a partnership with PT Jakarta Monorail for joint development of two monorail lines in the Indonesian capital at a cost of US$800 million. According to media in Indonesia and Thailand, the Consortium PT Jakarta Monorail (JM) signed at the end of last week a participation agreement with international partners and the city administration.
This gives the green light to a project which is becoming an absolute necessity to relieve growing congestions in the streets of the Indonesian capital. The construction start has been slightly delayed to the end of the year and it is hoped that first trains could start to circulate by the end of 2016. However, the project has been stalled for financing reasons for five years. It was due to start originally back to 2008 for a completion around 2011.
The consortium is due to start with the construction of two lines simultaneously: a green line, with 16 stations, will cover 14.27 kilometers from Komdak (the city police headquarters) to Satria Mandala Museum, both in South Jakarta; a blue line will cover 9.72 km from Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta to Roxy in West Jakarta, with 11 stations. The management given to Thai BTS company is valid for a period of 40 years.
JM plans to operate 10 trains comprising six cars each on the two lines by 2016, with each train capable of carrying 1,220 passengers. The monorail is expected to transport between 300,000 and 800,000 passengers per day with tickets costing around Rp 10,000 per trip.
